The Basilica suffered major damage during the 17th century while the city loses its commercial importance. It is restored little by little but the French Revolution and the bombing of 1940 damaged to the building. Pope Pie XII consecrated the Basilica in 1950.
On her death in March 1980, Camille Croué Friedman, came from Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, then emigrated to the United States, bequeathed to the Bishopric a fabulous amount which allows to launch a fantastic yard for the restoration of the Basilica.
The building is exceptional by the unity of its architecture. It is characterized by a great sober style and especially a deviation from the nave, due to a misjudgment of the composition of the soil. The plan of a basilica type, latin cross-shaped, as well as the west facade, gives it a great harmony. It is certainly the most majestic and homogeneous gothic building in Europe.
